Strong economic relations - competitive Lithuania

Wednesday, January 29, Vilnius - President Dalia Grybauskaitė met with foreign ambassadors accredited to Lithuania. The President thanked the ambassadors for cooperation during the Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union and for the support to Lithuania's membership in the UN Security Council. At the meeting, major tasks and events in the previous year were reviewed, as well as the current economic situation in Lithuania and around the world.

According to the President, Lithuania's economy is among the most rapidly growing in the European Union. We have the fastest internet, our foreign trade is steadily intensifying and strategic energy projects are vigorously implemented.

"More rapid economic growth and enhanced competition are key objectives of Lithuania. Therefore, it is very important to expand economic relations with foreign partners. Business cooperation and active trade with other countries contribute to the well-being of every Lithuanian citizen," the President said.

She underlined that the EU needs to continue with important tasks seeking quicker recovery of its economy. It is essential to further develop the strategic energy projects in order energy islands could be eliminated by 2015. It is also vital to ensure that the funds of the EU multiannual budget for 2014-2020 are used as effectively as possible allocating them for the spheres that need these funds the most - youth employment, support for innovative small and medium-sized enterprises, and energy projects.

Dalia Grybauskaitė noted that the EU should pay attention to further advancing the Eastern Partnership programme. It is important to work towards signing association agreements with Moldova and Georgia. Recent developments in Ukraine were also reviewed at the meeting. The President underlined that the Ukrainian government and opposition should seek concrete ways to the peaceful solution to the crisis in the country.

The President urged to place greater focus on new arising threats to cyber security, information security and energy security. These threats demand new solutions and proper reaction by the international community.
