Q - How does the NFU elect its officeholders?

Throughout its 108 year history the NFU officeholders have been elected by its Council. This is currently a body of around 80, composed of delegates from the counties of England and Wales. The members of Council have all, themselves, been through an electoral process - in the case of county delegates by a postal ballot of all NFUmembers (where the post is contested). In 2014, for the first time, votes for the President, Deputy President and Vice President will be weighted according to the size of the county that delegates represent.

In recent years the NFU has introduced a number of new features, including:

  • Candidates can now each make a pitch to Council at the election meeting
  • Hustings are now held in each region, where the candidates can make a presentation and answer questions to open meetings of members
  • A candidate's statement and video presentation will be uploaded to NFU online.

Q - How does the weighted vote work?

Each county has a number of votes, according to its size. This is worked out according to the County's share of member subscriptions in the total subscription income of the NFU.

Q - Why was this change made?

Council approved this change because it was thought to be a fairer and more proportionate system. It means that every county in England and Wales can send voting representatives to the NFU Council, but their votes accurately reflect the size of NFU membership in each county.
