Amazon announced today that Montgomery County, Maryland is one of 20 locations to move forward to the second round of consideration for Amazon’s next corporate headquarters (HQ2). Amazon received 238 proposals from cities and regions in over 50 states, provinces, districts and territories in North America.

“I am thrilled that Amazon chose Montgomery County to advance in the selection process,” said David Petr, President and CEO of the Montgomery County Economic Development Corporation (MCEDC). “Our combination of high-tech talent, transportation connectivity, cultural diversity and purpose-driven quality of life made for a compelling proposal that complemented the county and state’s significant financial incentives.”

The online marketplace giant expects to invest over $5 billion in the development of the multi-million square foot HQ2. If selected, Amazon’s HQ2 could bring as many as 50,000 high-paying jobs to Montgomery County and create tens of thousands of additional jobs in the surrounding communities.

“This is tremendous news for Montgomery County, our entire state, and further proof that Maryland is truly open for business,” said Governor Larry Hogan. “We look forward to continuing to work with our partners in Montgomery County, including County Executive Ike Leggett and his team, to ensure that we do everything possible to bring this project home. This news is certainly welcome, but the real challenge lies ahead – and Maryland is ready to meet it.”

“I am extremely proud of the collaborative efforts of Governor Hogan’s team, County Executive Leggett’s office, and our MCEDC staff, for their around-the-clock work to deliver a strong proposal,” added Petr. “Amazon clearly recognizes the many strengths of our region. Our county, regional and state partners are enthusiastic to continue conversations with Amazon, to deliver the solutions they need for long-term success.”
