Jones Walker LLP announced today that the high profile Baton Rouge criminal defense attorney, James “Jim” Edgar Boren, has joined the firm’s Baton Rouge office as a partner in the firm’s Business and Commercial Litigation Practice Group. Mr. Boren will practice with the Corporate Compliance & White Collar Defense Team whose members already include a former United States Attorney and several other former senior federal criminal prosecutors.

Mr. Boren is perhaps best known for his representation of student athletes and public officials and has developed a reputation as the criminal defense lawyer to call in high profile cases in Louisiana. Over the course of his 40-year legal career, Mr. Boren has represented a wide range of public officials including judges, law enforcement officers, and athletic directors. He is joining a team of attorneys at Jones Walker who focus on compliance with federal and international laws and regulations governing foreign corrupt practices, securities, environmental safety, and competition.

Mr. Boren appears frequently before the legislature to testify on reform legislation and serves on the Louisiana Law Institute’s Evidence and Criminal Procedure Advisory Committees. He is an adjunct professor at the Paul M. Hebert Law Center at Louisiana State University, where he teaches courses on wrongful conviction of the innocent and capital punishment, and has served on the Louisiana State Bar Association’s House of Delegates for 30 years.

Prior to joining Jones Walker, Mr. Boren practiced in his own criminal defense firm, The Law Office of James E. Boren, where he was a sole practitioner for more than 25 years. Earlier in his career, he served as an Assistant District Attorney with East Baton Rouge Parish, where he was the Chief of the Appellate Section.

Mr. Boren received his Juris Doctor degree from Louisiana State University’s Paul M. Hebert Law Center in 1975, where he graduated first in his class and was a member of the Louisiana State University Law Review. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Louisiana Tech University in 1971, where he was Omicron Delta Kappa.
