Iowa Energy Center : Ethanol Emissions Greener Than Previously Expected

A report issued this week by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) says that ethanol may release has much as 43 percent fewer greenhouse gases than standard gasoline. This is an even bigger difference than previous estimates of 21 percent fewer emissions.

Said Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, 'This report provides evidence that corn ethanol can be a GHG-friendly alternative to fossil fuels, while boosting farm economies.'

The report also states that 'by 2022, given current trends, the GHG profile of corn-based ethanol is expected to be almost 50 percent lower than gasoline primarily due to improvements in corn yields, process fuel switching, and transportation efficiency.'
