February Seminar to Explore Profitable Double-Crop System Solutions

BLOOMINGTON, ILL - January 22, 2016 - Farmers and others interested in more profitable double-crop wheat-soybean rotations are invited to a free seminar to explore the challenges and opportunities, Feb. 10, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn in Mt. Vernon, Ill. The event is hosted by the Illinois Soybean Association (ISA) and Illinois Wheat Association, and is funded in part by the Illinois soybean checkoff with support from several industry partners.

'With low commodity prices and tight margins, Illinois farmers should consider every option for increasing revenue,' says Ken McClintock, regional manager for Limagrain Cereal Seeds. 'New soybean and wheat varieties, along with better management, can make double-cropping an attractive option for many growers.'

ISA District 17 Director David Droste, who farms near Nashville, Ill., in Washington County, has seen positive results from double-cropping on his farm. 'Double-cropping can be more profitable, but it's also more sustainable. Wheat works like a cover crop, reducing erosion and nutrient loss while building better soil health, and provides a source of summer income that you don't get with just single-crop corn or soybeans,' he says.

Helping growers achieve more profitable double-crop rotations is a key part of ISA's efforts to help Illinois soybean farmers be the most knowledgeable and profitable soybean producers in the world. The event offers 5.5 continuing education units (CEUs) for attending crop consultants.
