During the hearing, Latah County Magistrate Judge Megan Marshall informed Kohberger of the five criminal charges against him. One for burglary and four for murder of the first degree.

Kohberger did not enter a plea and was denied bail. Judge Marshall ordered a no contact order with surviving roommates and the victims families.

He is scheduled to appear in court for a status hearing on Thursday, January 12.

The victims - Ethan Chapin, 20, of Conway, Washington; Xana Kernodle, 20, of Avondale, Arizona; Madison Mogen, 21, of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; and Kaylee Goncalves, 21, of Rathdrum, Idaho - all suffered multiple stab wounds, according to authorities.

Authorities have not publicly disclosed a motive but have said they are confident Kohberger is responsible for all four killings. A probable cause affidavit that lays out the basis for the charges will offer additional details once it is unsealed sometime after Kohberger's court appearance.
