Green Star Energy says it is 'delighted' to take on the customers of collapsed supplier Future Energy, which ceased trading on 25 January.

Ofgem announced it had chosen Green Star, which has more than 300,000 domestic customers across the UK, as supplier of last resort for Future Energy's 10,000 clients, based mainly in the north east of England and Yorkshire.

Following the news, Joanne Thornton, Green Star Energy's Managing Director, said: 'We are delighted to have been selected by Ofgem and are looking forward to welcoming Future Energy customers to our Green Star family.

'With a priority of delivering positive customer experiences, we will work towards a seamless transition for Future Energy's customers, including a commitment to provide their energy at the same price as their current contracts.'

Newcastle company Future Energy, which was set up in 2014, had about 10,000 domestic customers - mainly in north-east England - and employed 50 staff.

At the time of the company's launch, Managing Director Tim Cantle-Jones said he hoped to poach at least 80,000 customers from the UK's 'big six' energy suppliers.

The closure of Future Energy follows warnings by the boss of Co-Op Energy that volatility in wholesale prices could cause more suppliers to cease trading.

The Co-Op took on 160,000 customers from another supplier, GB Energy, when it went bust in late 2016. The cost of such 'last resort' measures is spread across all energy consumers, regardless of their supplier, with the Co-Op successfully claiming £14 million in compensation.
