TACOMA, WA--(Marketwired - Jan 15, 2014) - IID, securing the Internet with shared cyber intelligence, today announced that ICANN (The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) has reappointed IID Security Evangelist Merike Kaeo to its Security and Stability Advisory Committee (SSAC). Kaeo has served on ICANN's SSAC for the past three years. IID President and CTO Rod Rasmussen serves alongside Kaeo on the ICANN SSAC.

ICANN is an internationally organized nonprofit corporation that is responsible for Internet Protocol (IP) address space allocation, protocol identifier assignment, generic (gTLD) and country code (ccTLD) top-level domain name system management, and DNS root server system management functions.

"As the Internet grows and evolves, so do the methods used for abuse, both intentional and non-intentional," said Patrik Fältström, SSAC chairman. "We must work hard regarding both technical mitigation methods and information sharing in order to continue making the Internet a trusted place for both business and pleasure. I am happy to see Merike with her deep connections and technical background be reappointed to ICANN's Security and Stability Advisory Committee."

Kaeo has been traveling the world recently working with governments and industry groups to ensure technology and legal barriers don't get in the way of large-scale threat intelligence sharing. In fact, she helped contribute to the recent launch of Georgetown University's Security and Software Engineering Research Center (S2ERC). This center works with IID and other affiliated members, such as Symantec and Check Point Software Technologies, to research cyberthreats and tackle outstanding issues from a legal and governance perspective to foster information sharing across industry verticals and national boundaries.

"It is clear that the old paradigm of companies and vendors siloing threat intelligence doesn't work," said Kaeo. "The SSAC is a multinational, multistakeholder committee helping break down the barriers of sharing threat intelligence. I'm excited to continue helping them determine the best ways to share threat information and mitigate threats -- vital ingredients to securing the Internet."

Created in 2002 by ICANN, the SSAC advises the ICANN community and Board on matters relating to the security and integrity of the Internet's naming and address allocation systems. SSAC members span the public and private sector, and include some of the foremost Internet security experts and numerous people credited with creating the foundation for today's Internet.
