(Alliance News) - A total of 7.0 million passengers passed through Heathrow airport in June, up 18% from a year before, with North American routes driving the increase.

While the EU remained the top destination from the west London airport, with 2.4 million people headed there, this was up just 6.2% from June 2022. By contrast, the second most important destination, North America, saw a 17% increase to 2.0 million people.

Heathrow said the last three days of June were particularly strong for North Atlantic routes, as Americans headed home for the Independence Day holiday on July 4, which fell on a Tuesday this year.

The biggest percentage increase was by 80% to 835,000 passengers headed for Asia-Pacific destinations, as Covid-19 restrictions had lingered in that region last year, particularly in China.

"We are pleased to have agreed a two-year pay deal which helps colleagues with the cost of living crisis and means that travellers can be confident that their travel plans won't be affected by strike action," Heathrow said.

At the end of June, Heathrow announced Thomas Woldbye as its new chief executive, replacing John Holland Kaye who leaves later this year after nearly 10 years in post. Woldbye has been chief executive of Copenhagen airport since 2011.
