GoDaddy, the world's largest technology provider dedicated to small businesses, today announced it has sponsored the OpenStack Foundation, a global community of developers collaborating on cloud architecture and an open source cloud operating system. This is a key step in GoDaddy's strategy to invest in the most scalable, simple-to-implement and feature-rich cloud technology.

"GoDaddy's reach will enable its 12 million users to realize the benefits of running their applications on open cloud technologies," said OpenStack Chief Operating Officer Mark Collier. "Service providers offering OpenStack powered solutions are a cornerstone of OpenStack's mission to be the ubiquitous, open platform for public and private clouds. We're glad to have GoDaddy as a sponsor of the Foundation and look forward to their continued code and community contributions."

GoDaddy is using OpenStack internally and it is the foundation for the GoDaddy cloud platform. OpenStack will help manage GoDaddy applications and services, and provide a platform for small business customers to host applications. GoDaddy will use open source-based technologies to simplify the complexity for small business owners, making it easy to leverage scalable and open technologies.

GoDaddy CTO Elissa Murphy, along with GoDaddy VP of Engineering Charles Beadnall are key members of the engineering leadership team who have been involved with the OpenStack community for more than two years in current and past roles. GoDaddy is also planning to hire engineers to help develop, collaborate and contribute to the OpenStack community.

"GoDaddy is continuing to shift business operations to the cloud and using open source platforms to do it. With the launch of the GoDaddy cloud platform, we're making significant progress in building a powerful and unified platform for our small business customers," said Murphy, who took over as CTO in April 2013. "By sponsoring the OpenStack Foundation, we're making a strategic move toward building GoDaddy's cloud platform services. We plan to continue to contribute to the code base and use it as our own cloud infrastructure, as well."

This is the second announcement in as many weeks showcasing GoDaddy's commitment to the open source community. GoDaddy recently announced it is using the Spree Commerce platform to deliver an open source-based e-commerce solution for small businesses.
