On 17 January, a workshop organised by the European Commission, 'European Union Energy Day: Transitioning the Electricity Sector', will take place at the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. It is part of a series of EU Energy Days that was initiated at COP22 in Marrakesh, and will be the Commission's first opportunity to share and discuss its recently launched proposals for a new Electricity Market Design and for a revised Renewable Energy Directive in an international context. Participants will come from governments and the private sector.

It follows the seventh session of the Assembly of IRENA (the International Renewable Energy Agency), which took place on 14-15 January, also in Abu Dhabi. The Assembly included two Ministerial Roundtables on the topics of innovation and energy access. The EU's progress in implementing its Strategic Energy Technology Plan and its proposal to accelerate clean energy innovation were presented in the discussion on innovation. EU-funded activities that support off-grid renewable energy deployment were also discussed, with a particular focus on the EU's Africa Investment Facility. In addition, the EU's commitment to implementing the UN's Sustainable Development Goals was emphasised.
