Ellies : Bustos Statement After USMCA Signed Into Law

Washington - Today, Congresswoman Cheri Bustos (IL-17) issued the following statement in response to the United States Mexico Canada Agreement (USMCA) being signed into law:

'After a challenging year and months of tough negotiation, I am glad to see the United States Mexico Canada Trade Agreement signed into law today,' said Congresswoman Bustos. 'With this deal, House Democrats delivered trade certainty for today and built a strong trade foundation for tomorrow. While no agreement is ever perfect, the USMCA will serve all Illinoisans - it has the toughest enforcement mechanisms our country has ever seen, expands access to markets for our producers, and has broad support among stakeholders. Finally, we have a trade deal that helps our farmers, workers, and manufacturers alike.'

BACKGROUND

Congresswoman Bustos helped to chart a path to secure the USMCA agreement, including touring Illinois' 17^th Congressional District to speak with farmers, labor organizers and local stakeholders, and convening a meeting between Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, the Illinois Farm Bureau and Farmers for Free Trade, in order to ensure that the concerns of all parties were brought to the table.

On the day the bill passed the House, Congresswoman Bustos delivered a speech on the Floor of the House in support of the USMCA. Local labor, agricultural, and manufacturing stakeholders have previously expressed support for the trade deal and Congresswoman Bustos' work to secure the agreement.
