Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council : Successful start for Great North Energy

The Doncaster Council run energy provider Great North Energy has already switched almost 1000 energy supplies since its launch on 7 November.

Mayor Ros Jones said: 'With the cost of energy continuing to rise, our priority is to help ensure Doncaster residents are on the right deal for them and they are not paying more than they need to. This is especially important at times like this when we are in a cold snap and heating bills can become a real worry for many people.

At the same time as urging residents to switch on low prices with Great North Energy, the council's cabinet has today agreed to extend the services of Great North Energy to Doncaster's businesses,which will add to the support already provided and help to ensure that inward investment in Doncaster continues to rise. Providing a better energy deal for Doncaster businesses will have numerous benefits for local companies including helping to reduce their energy consumption, making sure the energy deal and associated meter is suitable for the business consumption levels and assisting with the sourcing of finance for energy efficiency improvements.

Councillor Joe Blackham, Cabinet Member for Highways, Street Scene and Trading Services, added: 'This is another great way that we can help local businesses and investors who are planning to come to Doncaster. We aim to have the offer available later this year, at which point we'll be working with partners to help promote its new low cost tariffs.'

The next step is to undertake a tender process to recruit a suitable business energy supply company partner and this is expected to get underway in the next few months.
