In an effort to help customers manage winter heating bills, Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania, Inc. will be releasing a series of weekly installments throughout the heating season called 'Cold Weather Minute.' These tips are aimed at helping customers manage their energy bills this winter heating season by using energy wisely.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU SMELL GAS

If you suspect a natural gas leak there are certain safety measures you should take. If you smell gas inside your home:

  • Do not investigate - immediately evacuate the area.
  • Warn others to stay away from the area.
  • Leave windows and doors in their current position.
  • Do not operate anything that could cause a spark, including flipping a light switch, dialing a cell phone, turning on a flashlight or an appliance.
  • If you detect a gas odor in your garage, do not start your car.

After evacuating, from a safe location call 911 and Columbia Gas at 1-888-460-4332. When emergency personnel arrive, explain the situation to them. Learn more about natural gas safety.
