The Saint John-EMO has expanded the evacuation area in response to a butane gas leak on Bayside Drive to include all homes on River Avenue in the City's east side. All residents in the affected area are being asked to leave their homes by 6:00 p.m. this evening. First responders are attempting to notify all residents by going door-to-door. Working with the Canadian Red Cross, arrangements are in place to transport all affected residents by bus to nearby overnight accommodations.

Evacuated residents can check in with the Canadian Red Cross by calling 1-800-222-9597. All evacuated residents are being provided with transportation to accommodation at a nearby hotel as well as food. Pets will be accommodated at the hotel with their owners and food for pets will be available for those who need it.

There are approximately 20 homes being evacuated on River Avenue.

Bayside Drive remains closed to all through traffic between the intersection of the causeway and Red Head Road. The public is asked to drive with caution, plan their travel accordingly and avoid the surroundings areas if possible. There is a lot of emergency response traffic in the area.

Further information will be provided as it is available.
