(1/26/2017) Mayor Toni N. Harp, Alder Sal DeCola, City Engineer Giovanni Zinn, and Chris Schweitzer of the New Haven Climate Movement today announced the city's new involvement with the Compact of Mayors, the world's largest cooperative effort among mayors and city officials to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and climate risks in cities.

The compact includes over 600 cities and more than 450 million people around the world, and memorializes their commitment to this effort to address issues related to climate change.

'Climate change and environmental sustainability are global issues,' Mayor Harp said. 'And all global residents are at risk.'

The Compact of Mayors uses standardized reporting tools to assess climate change, and to develop an action plan. This effort in New Haven will parallel Governor Malloy's Council on Climate Change at the state level to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by the year 2050.

'Climate change is not something that is off in the future. It is happening now,' said Zinn.

The timeline for the New Haven Climate and Sustainability Framework includes three monthly opportunities for public input regarding priorities, goals, and plans to help move this initiative forward:

• February 7 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the New Haven Free Public Library.

• March 1 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Fair Haven School.

• March 14 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at a location yet to be determined.

As Chris Schweitzer said in his remarks, 'New Haven is a leader for Connecticut for the fight against climate change.'

'Cities are at the forefront of climate change action,' said Mayor Harp, emphasizing that cities like New Haven near or on the water experience the greatest threat.

The Mayor urges all residents of New Haven and abroad to fully support and participate in the effort to combat climate change.
