With cyber attacks on the rise, information security has become one of the country’s fastest growing fields, with a projected 10-year growth rate of 37 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. To help address the critical shortage of cybersecurity specialists, Capella University has launched two new graduate certificates in Digital Forensics and Network Defense.
The National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security have designated Capella University as a National Center for Academic Excellence in Information Assurance/Cyber Defense (CAE in IA/CD). In addition, Capella is one of only two universities designated to provide education in the five focus areas covered by the two certificates. Capella University (http://www.capella.edu) is a regionally accredited online university* that offers online degree programs designed to help working adults advance in their careers.
Capella certificates offer a marketable credential in as little as
nine months
Both the Digital Forensics and the Network Defense
certificates include five courses that can be completed in as little as
nine months. The certificates are comprised entirely of courses from
Capella’s Master of Science in Information Assurance in Security
(MS-IAS), Digital Forensics and Network Defense specializations, and
credits earned in the certificate can be applied toward the
corresponding MS-IAS program. Applicants who hold a current Certified
Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) certification from
(ISC)2 can earn both a Capella certificate and the MS-IAS in
the same area by completing just two additional classes beyond the five
courses required for the certificate.
Digital Forensics certificate focuses on computer forensics
investigations
In Capella’s Digital Forensics certificate
program, IT professionals gain knowledge and skills that enhance and
expand their ability to investigate technology crimes and keep computer
networks safe in a variety of professional settings. The certificate is
aligned to the Digital Forensics and Security Incident Analysis and
Response focus areas of the CAE in IA/CD designation and provides
students with foundational knowledge required to sit for the Certified
Cyber Forensics Professional (CCFP) and Certified Hacking Forensics
Investigator (CHFI) exams.
Students learn how data can be hidden on a computer, evaluate computer forensics investigation tools and procedures, handle and transport uncovered data, and create reports to present evidence at trial. Capella’s secure virtual lab provides hands-on experience in state-of-the-art technology—including EnCase ® and NetWitness—that simulates law enforcement and federal security investigations.
Network Defense certificate covers network security testing and
controls
IT professionals in Capella’s Network Defense
certificate program learn to identify network vulnerabilities and
develop and implement solutions to safeguard the information assets and
enterprise IT infrastructures of an organization. The certificate is
aligned to the Network Security Administration, Network Security
Engineering, and System Security Engineering focus areas of the CAE in
IA/CD designation and provides students with foundational knowledge
required to sit for the Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) and Certified
Network Defense Architect (CNDA) exams.
The certificate also covers network security controls and testing, telecommunication, cryptography, penetration testing, visualization, risk assessment, and information security regulation standards—the technical and managerial controls critical to the success of a network defense career. The Capella virtual lab employs leading industry tools, including Nessus, BackTrack, and Metasploit, allowing students to explore real-world penetration testing techniques and respond to security breaches and perform vulnerability assessment in real time, including system sanitizing and hardening.
