CABEI assumes pro tempore presidency of the G-16, the multilateral cooperation and development group of countries in Honduras

Tegucigalpa, January 19, 2022.- From January to June of this year, the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) will assume the pro tempore presidency of the Group of 16 (G-16), a body whose purpose is to support the country's sustainable development, and which is made up of representatives of the main countries and multilateral international cooperation organizations in Honduras.

The presidency rotates every six months, and the current handover marks the beginning of a period in which CABEI, as the Bank for Central American development and integration, will promote a coordinated agenda between the government, private enterprise and civil society that responds to the strategic lines of the G-16, such as strengthening the rule of law, transparency and accountability, human rights and gender, health, climate change, aid effectiveness, dialogue with the private sector, migration and the electoral cycle.

"For us it is an honor to begin 2022 assuming the presidency of this important group that oversees the development of strategies that guarantee the country's social and economic wellbeing, issues to which CABEI is fully committed not only in Honduras, but throughout the region," highlighted CABEI Executive President Dr. Dante Mossi.

He added that, within the framework of this strategy, the multilateral will focus on key issues such as The Plan for the First Hundred Days of the New Government, priority sectors, management of the pandemic and return to school, actions to improve access to health and education, the current state of the Honduran economy and priority projects for fiscal strengthening, debt structure and public spending.

The current situation of the electricity subsector and reform proposals for its strengthening, economic reactivation, employment generation and the agenda for poverty reduction, adaptation to climate change and resilient cities will also be discussed.

The Group of 16 is made up of representatives from 15 countries, three development banks and four multilateral organizations and operates at four levels: heads of mission, heads of cooperation, technical-sectoral roundtables, and a secretariat. At its different levels, the group maintains a political, economic, and technical dialogue with the government, civil society, the private sector, and academia.

The history of the G-16 in Honduras

First period, "Reconstruction" (1998-1999): creation of the G-16 as a Follow-up Group for international cooperation one year after Hurricane Mitch.

The eighth period begins this year 2022 with newly elected authorities and CABEI as President pro tempore. In this way, the Bank contributes to articulating cooperation efforts to improve the quality of life of Honduran citizens and the rule of law.
