Bob’s Discount Furniture today announced it is donating $45,000 to the Save the Children Federation, whose nutrition, healthcare, education and emergency response programs give millions of children each year a healthy start, the opportunity to learn and protection from harm.

Half of this donation was made possible by customer contributions to collection jars in Bob’s store cafes, which offer shoppers free coffee, ice cream, cookies and other refreshments. By matching those donations, Bob’s was able to provide $45,000 – its fourth quarterly cafe-funds donation of 2014 – to Save the Children.

Save the Children’s U.S. organization started in 1932, providing clothes, school supplies and hot lunches to rural children in Depression-era Kentucky. Today, it raises and spends nearly $700 million a year advocating for children’s rights, responding to disasters and assisting needy children with nutrition, health and education support in U.S. communities and around the world. In recent years it has helped communities in New York and New Jersey affected by Hurricane Sandy, as well as children affected by tornados in Oklahoma and floods in Colorado

“This remarkable organization makes a huge difference in the lives of young people around the world,” said Cathy Poulin, public relations director, Bob’s Discount Furniture. “It’s a perfect fit for our philanthropic efforts, which are primarily focused on schools and children-related charities.”

Bob’s officials will present a donation check to Save the Children representatives at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 12, at Bob’s Bridgeport, Conn., store, at 815 Lafayette Blvd. News media are welcome to attend.
