Protests broke out after the Kazakh government lifted price controls on liquefied petroleum gas at the start of the year, with many of the country's citizens having converted their cars to run on LPG because of its low cost.
A reversal of the price rise has failed to calm protesters and violence has raged for the past few days. On Thursday (January 6) police in Almaty said they had killed dozens of rioters overnight, and the interior ministry said at least 18 law enforcement officers had died so far in clashes, including two found decapitated.
