New edition updates 2011 edition of AISI S220

WASHINGTON, D.C., January 18, 2016 - The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) has published AISI S220-15, North American Standard for Cold-Formed Steel Framing―Nonstructural Members, 2015 Edition, to address requirements for building construction with nonstructural members made from cold-formed steel. This standard is intended for adoption and use in the United States, Canada and Mexico. AISI S220-15 is available for free download at www.aisistandards.org.

The standard provides an integrated treatment of Allowable Strength Design (ASD), Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD), and Limit States Design (LSD) by including the appropriate resistance factors for use with LRFD and LSD, and the appropriate factors of safety for use with ASD. This edition updates the 2011 edition of AISI S220.

These major revisions were made in the 2015 edition:

  • Performance requirements for screw penetration were added in Section A6.6.
  • Referenced documents in Section A7 were updated.
  • Testing requirements were expanded in Section F1 to reference the new AISI S916-15 Test Standard when required to determine the strength and deformation behavior of bridging connectors. AISI S916-15, Test Standard for Cold-Formed Steel Framing - Nonstructural Interior Partition Walls With Gypsum Board, 2015 Edition, establishes a rational method of determining the strength and stiffness of nonstructural interior partition wall assemblies framed with cold-formed steel. It provides an alternative to the calculation of capacity based on AISI S100, North American Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members, and permits manufacturers to determine limiting height values for the assemblies. AISI S916-15 is available for free download at www.aisistandards.org.
  • Testing requirements for screw penetration were added in Section F3, and the test method was added to Appendix 1.

AISI's codes and standards work is conducted under the Construction Market Council of the Steel Market Development Institute (SMDI), a business unit of AISI, which oversees the industry's investment in advancing the competitive use of steel by meeting the demands of the marketplace. AISI serves as the voice of the North American steel industry in the public policy arena and advances the case for steel in the marketplace as the preferred material of choice. AISI also plays a lead role in the development and application of new steels and steelmaking technology. AISI is comprised of 19 member companies, including integrated and electric furnace steelmakers, and approximately 125 associate members who are suppliers to or customers of the steel industry.
