International stocks trading in New York closed mostly lower on Tuesday.

The S&P/BNY Mellon index of American depositary receipts edged up 0.1% to 157.49. The European index rose 0.9% to 152.95. The Asian index retreated 1.3% to 181.57. The Latin American index slipped 0.1% to 202.25, while the emerging-markets index moved down 1.2% to 299.55.

Novo Nordisk was among those whose ADRs traded actively.

The healthcare company surged 17% after a study showed the company's drug Wegovy not only helped people lose weight, but also reduced their risk of heart attacks, strokes and cardiovascular deaths by 20%.

James Hardie Industries rose 15% following the building materials supplier's first quarter results and outlook.
