J.
Rock Tonkel, Jr. is President and Head of Investment Banking at Friedman, Billings, Ramsey Group, Inc., a position he has held since April 2004.
In May 2003 he became an executive officer of FBR Group and in April 2004, he became a member of the four-person Office of the Chief Executive.
Prior to joining FBR, Mr. Tonkel served as Special Assistant to the Director of the Office of Thrift Supervision (OTS), the regulatory agency for the savings and loan industry.
At the OTS, Mr. Tonkel oversaw the restructuring of many of the nation’s largest troubled thrifts and savings banks, including Glendale Federal Bank, California Federal Bank, and Dime Savings Bank of New York.
He was involved in major recapitalizations, which raised more than $2.5 billion in equity for institutions with combined total assets of more than $70 billion.
Prior to OTS, Mr. Tonkel was an associate with Prudential Securities and an associate with Keefe, Bruyette & Woods, Inc. in New York City.
Mr. Tonkel received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Amherst College.
