Surrey Police has won a sustainability award in recognition of its green efforts.

It was handed the 2011 public sector sustainability award in the emergency services category.

These prestigious Government-promoted awards recognise the most inspiring and practical developments in sustainability management throughout the public sector.

Eunice Mabey, environment and energy manager for the force, said: "Environmental benefits tend to go hand in hand with financial efficiencies and, following the Government's comprehensive spending  review in October 2010, being cost effective and providing value for money is playing an even larger role than usual."

The force encourages it employees to be greener and invests in technology to reduce its carbon footprint.

It also works with Surrey Wildlife Trust to help manage biodiversity, especially at the force's wooded headquarters in Guildford.

Mrs Mabey said: "We are continuing to look at ways to improve and will be assessing several more areas, including LED lighting and introducing water meters."
