I'm excited to announce that Justin O'Neill, one of our most skilled editors on the Home team, will be the new deputy editor for nights.

As an assistant editor for the past two years, Justin has been an anchor of the Home operation during stints on both nightside and dayside. He has helped lead the team through some of the biggest news moments and coordinated coverage and presentation with newsroom leaders. He is known for his headline prowess, sound judgement and thoughtful demeanor.

"Justin is one of the best headline writers in the building," says Politics deputy editor Karen Workman, "and he brings such solid judgment and thoughtfulness to every decision. Working with Justin is an absolute privilege. Having him in this leadership role is a win for the whole newsroom."

Justin joined The Times in 2014 as a news assistant and later worked as an assistant to Greg Brock and Phil Corbett in the Standards department. Justin moved to the News Desk in 2017.

Working alongside Steve Kenny and the nightside crew, Justin will be well-positioned to handle a busy season of midterm elections, an ongoing pandemic and whatever other breaking news inevitably comes our way. He starts Jan. 10. Please join me in congratulating him.
