Sotheby's London sale OF ROYAL AND NOBLE DESCENT Generates Strong Enthusiasm among Art Lovers


FASCINATING ROYAL AND ARISTOCRATIC HEIRLOOMS SURPASSES EXPECTATIONS AND TOTALS £2.5 MILLION (€3.2 MILLION)


The Pre-sale Exhibition which featured Spectacular Paper Sculptures By British Artist Zoe Bradley attracted almost 2,000 Visitors


London, 20 January 2016 - Sotheby's London "Of Royal and Noble Descent" sale concluded yesterday with an outstanding total of £2,483,781 (€3,248,044 / $3,545,597), well above pre-sale expectations (£1,380,380- 2,099,470). The sale, which featured fascinating royal and aristocratic heirlooms from the collections of prestigious European dynasties and institutions, generated strong enthusiasm among international collectors and art lovers:


  • Participants came from 31 countries (including Russia, Asia, Middle East and Latin America)

  • 20% of buyers were completely new to Sotheby's

  • Almost 90% lots found a buyer

  • Nearly 60% of them achieved prices above their high estimates

  • 2,000 people visited the pre-sale exhibition which was highlighted by spectacular paper sculptures especially designed by British Artist Zoe Bradley

The top lot in the sale was a large Maiolica footed dish, attributed to the 'Painter of the Apollo Basin', which sold for £257,000 (€336,079), thereby establishing the highest price in the sale. The artwork which came from a European private collection had been estimated at £30,000-40,000.
