Skanska AB announced that in a joint venture with Stacy and Witbeck, it has signed a contract with the city of Los Angeles to construct the new Sixth Street Viaduct in Los Angeles, US. This total contract is worth USD 191 million, of which Skanska USA Civil will include its share of USD 134 million in the order bookings for the first quarter 2017. Reportedly, this new structure will be a Los Angeles landmark. The design of the bridge, known as 'The Ribbon of Light', was created by Los Angeles-based architect Michael Maltzan. The original bridge, built in 1932, spanned about 1,000 metres across the river and was used to represent Los Angeles in countless movies, music videos and TV. Yet, due to a rare chemical reaction in the cement supports and seismic vulnerability, the Sixth Street Viaduct needed to be demolished and replaced. The joint venture team had previously demolished the former structure under a separate contract. It was also awarded the contract for the new bridge's foundations in August 2016 and that portion of the viaduct construction is well under way. The new viaduct will be opened to traffic in 2020.
