RSI Announces Commencement of a Research Project on Electrical Resistivity Anisotropy Characterization ("ERA")

RSI is pleased to announce the launch of its ERA research project, which will commence in January 2013. Phase one of the study will be focused in the Barents Sea. The project will build on RSI's existing atlas of rock physics and seismic responses, and will use well log, CSEM data and rock physics modeling to develop a better understanding of regional resistivity and anisotropy trends. The research project will examine the underlying causes of these trends and develop methods to predict anisotropy from common well log measurements, extending the proven success of the EM method to a wider regional application. Further phases will extend this work into additional hydrocarbon basins including Gulf of Mexico, West Africa, the Malay Basin and onshore unconventional plays, with emphasis on both acoustic and electrical anisotropy.
Four companies including Statoil and Electromagnetic Geoservices ASA (EMGS) (who will contribute CSEM and anisotropic inversion data from their comprehensive Barents Sea data library) have confirmed their participation, and a number of other companies have expressed strong interest.
Richard Cooper, RSI's CEO commented: "An understanding of anisotropy, both acoustic and electrical, is key to the successful application of seismic and non-seismic surface geophysical measurements in a number of key play types, such as well-planning in deep-water sub-salt targets, CSEM for offshore reservoir characterization, and sweet-spot detection in shale plays. Although the industry has developed imaging and inversion algorithms to accommodate anisotropic parameters, there is a need to develop companion methods to independently validate these parameters using well-log data and rock-physics models. The ERA project is designed to deliver this understanding."
Stated Dr. Lucy MacGregor, RSI's Chief Technology Officer: "Controlled source electromagnetic (CSEM) survey data provides valuable information on the resistivity of the sub-surface, and increasing volumes of these data are now available. Additional value of these data can be realized by interpretation within a regional resistivity context, and calibration, where possible, to well log data using a robust rock physics framework. To do this requires analysis of regional resistivity and anisotropy trends, and investigation of their underlying cause."
