Jakarta, 13 Januari 2012 - Bank Mandiri will host Expo Wirausaha Muda Mandiri (Mandiri young entrepreneurs expo) on January 19-22, 2012 at Jakarta Convention Center. This event represents Bank Mandiri's commitment to support entrepreneurship in Indonesia.

Mr. Pahala N. Mansury, Bank Mandiri Director of Finance and Strategy, said that Wirausaha Muda Mandiri program (Mandiri young entrepreneurs program) would help transform the thinking paradigm among university students and alumni to consider pursuing entrepreneurship as a career instead of competing for employment opportunities.

"We are confident that community welfare will increase along with an increase in entrepreneurship. The Indonesian economy will benefit from entrepreneurship because it leads to job creation and can reduce the level of unemployment, "said Mr. Pahala N. Mansury.

The expo is expected to attract 11,000 university student visitors. It also serves as an important forum which facilitates discussions and exchange of ideas among members of public as well as academics. Currently, entrepreneurs represent only 0.24% of the total working-age population in Indonesia (based on 2010 data from BPS - i.e. Office of Central Statistics). In developed countries, entrepreneurs represent more than 2% of the total working-age population.

The number of participants in the Wirausaha Muda Mandiri competition in 2011 was higher compared to the numbers in previous years. The competition attracted 3,751 participants in 2011 and 3,294 participants in 2010.

The jury will evaluate the work of the participants on January 16-17, 2012 and announce the winners of Wirausaha Muda Mandiri competition on January 20, 2012.

Wirausaha Muda Mandiri program represents Bank Mandiri's support to develop entrepreneurship among university students. The search for young talents in entrepreneurship is conducted through several initiatives, including scholarship, awards, and workshops at private and state universities.

Wirausaha Muda Mandiri is a flagship program, which is aimed to change the perspectives among university students toward entrepreneurship; make the micro, small, and medium business segment as a main choice for their future; and increase the number and quality of businesses in this segment. Through such program, the banking sector can help this business segment become a key driver of the Indonesian economy. In terms of international acknowledgement, Wirausaha Muda Mandiri program received a corporate social responsibility (CSR) award from Enterprise Asia for the category of Investment in People.

Bank Mandiri will also take the opportunity to present the Mandiri Young Technopreneur (MYT) award. The MYT program is designed to encourage continuous innovations in technology among young people in Indonesia. There are 617 participants competing to win the award this year.

Bank Mandiri will provide funding to the winners to implement their work. Furthermore, they are expected to contribute improvements in local community welfare through the implementation of their ideas.

"We are focusing on technology that can bring a wide impact to a community and be developed commercially," said Mr. Pahala N. Mansury.

Mr. Mansury explained that innovations and new technology are imperative to win the competition in the free market and they must support efforts to improve sustainability of the environment. Mandiri Young Technopreneurs program represents Bank Mandiri's contribution to support the development of technology and innovations in Indonesia.

In 2011, Bank Mandiri provided Rp 53.76 billion to support the development of entrepreneurship through Bina Lingkungan program (environmental development) and Rp 109.01 billion to support the growth in micro, small and medium businesses through Kemitraan program (partnership program).
