Electricite de France SA's nuclear power station Hunterston B in Scotland will close on Friday after operating for almost 46 years, the company said.

The French energy player said reactors at the station will undergo a statutory outage to make sure they are ready for defueling, which is then expected to take around three years.

The station, in North Ayrshire, came online in 1976. It has produced almost 300 terawatt hours of electricity, enough to power every home in Scotland for 31 years, EDF said.

The company had announced Hunterston B's closure in August 2020.
