Creating opportunities for economic empowerment through onion seed production in Pakistan

The Cardno-managed Market Development Facility (MDF) recently published a fascinating photo story about its partnership with a multinational seed company to improve onion seed farmers' livelihood and create opportunities for women's economic empowerment in Chitral, Pakistan.

MDF partners with Magnus Kahl Seeds (MKS) to assist farmers to increase onion seed production by providing farmers with high quality onion seeds and bulbs to grow. With MDF's support, MKS has increased its production capacity of quality seeds by investing in improved seed drying facilities; establishing a seed testing laboratory to maintain high seed quality; and providing extension services to farmers.

Following the intervention, more than 90 male seed farmers have experienced an increase of more than Rs. 19,000 (USD 181) in a year after cultivation, while 35 female seed farmers have earned more than Rs. 7,500 (USD 71) during the same period. MDF's research shows that women farmers in Chitral use their increased income on household expenditures and the education of their children.
