BJ's Wholesale Club, Inc. (NYSE: BJ) today reported that sales for June 2011 increased by 10.3% to $1.18 billion from $1.07 billion in June 2010. Comparable club sales for June 2011 increased by 7.3%, including a contribution from sales of gasoline of 3.8%. Excluding the impact of gasoline, merchandise comparable club sales increased by approximately 3.5%.

In June 2010, the Company reported a comparable club sales increase of 3.8%, including a contribution from sales of gasoline of 0.6%. Excluding gasoline, merchandise comparable club sales increased by 3.2%.

The Company provided the following additional information regarding comparable club sales for June 2011:

  • Sales increased in all five weeks with the strongest increase in week two.
  • Comparable club sales increased in all major regions with the strongest increases in the Southeast and Upstate New York regions.
  • Excluding sales of gasoline, the average transaction amount increased by approximately 4% and traffic was approximately flat.
  • Sales of food increased by approximately 5%, driven primarily by fresh food. Sales of general merchandise increased by approximately 1%.
  • Departments with the strongest sales increases compared to last year included beauty care, chemicals, coffee, computer equipment, cookies, dairy, deli, eggs, frozen, lawn & garden, meat, milk, paper, prepared foods, produce, salty snacks, small appliances and summer seasonal. Departments with weaker sales compared to last year included diapers, pre-recorded video and televisions.
