Volunteers in Afghanistan dig graves for quake victims

STORY: Saturday's (October 7) quakes were among the world's deadliest in a year when tremors in Turkey and Syria killed an estimated 50,000 in February.

One grave-digging volunteer, Abdul Sattar, urged the international community to provide humanitarian and financial aid to the affected.

"I call upon the international community to provide humanitarian and financial aid to these affected people. Their first hope is God, followed by other countries. These people are stuck between the Earth and sky (they are helpless)" he said.

Women and children make up two-thirds of the victims of the recent earthquakes in Afghanistan who were hospitalised with severe injuries, the head of the World Health Organization's (WHO) emergency response in the country said on Monday.
