GOP Continues Attack on WV Workers, Brings Repeal of Prevailing Wage to Committee

Delegate Isaac Sponaugle and House Democrats stand up for WV workers

(Charleston, WV)- This morning one of the House Republican's anti-worker bills made its way to the House Government Organization Committee. The bill is House Bill 4005, Repealing prevailing wage requirements. House Democrats are not allowing this 'irresponsible' bill to be rushed through in the GOP's effort to lower wages and benefits for West Virginia workers.

Democratic Delegate Isaac Sponaugle took a stand for West Virginia Workers, demanding a fiscal note before the bill could go any further, telling Republican Chair Delegate Gary Howell that it is 'irresponsible' for the GOP to continue to push this bill without one.

Delegate Sponaugle's motion was denied by Republicans on a voice vote since according to Delegate Gary Howell, there are no cost savings to the state with the repeal of prevailing wage.

This isn't surprising considering the Republican Party only cares about lining their own pockets and the pockets of their friends while West Virginia workers suffer.

Delegate Sponaugle also spoke before the sea of thousands of West Virginia workers last week who gathered at the Capitol to fight against the radical Republican attack on their jobs and wages.

House Democrats vowed last week before the 2016 legislative session that they would support NO PAY CUTS for WV workers.

Repealing prevailing wage means lower wages, shotty benefits (if any at all), and weakened workplace safety for our workers here in the Mountain State.

Taking money out of the pockets of West Virginia working families and putting it into the pockets of corporations and their big money friends seems to be the number one priority of the GOP.
The committee will meet again at 2 p.m. and you can listen live here.
