The United States Department of State lauded the Government of Honduras’ remarkable success in its efforts to significantly reduce violence and bring peace to the country last year. This achievement was possible due to the responsible implementation of the Honduran Government’s strategy to counter such threats as cross-border organized crime and human trafficking.

Within the High-Level Dialogue on Security Issues between the United States and Honduras, the Department of State also highlighted Honduras’ considerable success in its fight against the trafficking of migrants, in which the capture of smugglers and the rescue of hundreds of migrant children were important steps in terms of improving overall safety and security.

In a press release issued by Marie Harf, Deputy Spokesperson at the State Department, the United States also commended Honduras for its historic agreement with Transparency International, which is aimed at promoting government accountability and reducing corruption.

Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez said these are important achievements for the country and which complement other accomplishments that are improving Honduras’ new international standing, in keeping with its efforts to further open country to the world. "Today we can proudly say that Honduras is an increasingly safer and more prosperous country. We are on the right track and will continue on this path of building a better country for all," said the president.
