Sinn Féin Energy spokesperson, Cathal Boylan, MLA has called on AES to lift the threat of closure of the Kilroot plant and to give workers reassurance about their jobs.

Responding to the announcement from AES that they intend to close the Kilroot plant Mr Boylan said:

'AES, as an electricity provider, has an obligation under the Grid Code to help ensure continuity of supply.

'Before they can withdraw from the Grid Code they are required to give three years notice. That has not happened.

'AES has made substantial profits from their contracts selling electricity here and they have a responsibility to their workforce and suppliers which they must honour rather than seeking to abandon them.'
