Health officials in Hamas-controlled Gaza say more than 9,700 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli air strikes since Hamas killed 1,400 Israelis and seized more than 240 hostages on October 7.

After the meeting, Blinken said he discussed with Fidan efforts to expand humanitarian efforts in Gaza and to prevent the conflict in the region from spreading. He said the coming days would show humanitarian assistance expanding in significant ways.

Turkey, a NATO member which supports a two-state solution in the Middle East, has sharply criticized Israel's actions in Gaza. Ankara does not view Hamas as a terrorist organization, unlike Western countries, and hosts some of its members.
