SEATTLE - On Wednesday, January 11, 2017, at 8:26 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to the area of 4th Avenue S and S Washington Street for a natural gas leak at a construction site.
Construction crews working on the Yesler Street overpass project ruptured a two-inch gas line that leaked gas in the open air. Most of the gas dissipated into the atmosphere. Firefighters isolated the area and evacuated surrounding buildings after detecting a high concentration of gas in an adjacent parking garage.
Firefighters continued to monitor the buildings and surrounding area while Puget Sound Energy shut off the flow of gas. Once the gas was shut off, fire crews ventilated the buildings until gas was no longer detected. Puget Sound Energy had the leak under control by 9:11 p.m.
Seattle Police Department, Seattle Public Utilities and City Light were also on scene to assist with this incident. There were no reported injuries.
