The study concludes that biodiesel reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 76% compared to petroleum. Even after including indirect emissions from international land use change, biodiesel still reduces GHGs by 72%. These results depart from previous studies by Argonne, NREL, USDA, USEPA, and the
California Air Resources Board only in that the new penalty for indirect land use change is significantly smaller than estimated previously. Experts from Purdue University make it very clear that these new numbers are more accurate, because more data was incorporated into this latest study. The published study can be accessed online here. NBB and the National Biodiesel Foundation contributed to this peer-reviewed analysis which offers the most current data and modeling to quantify the direct and indirect impact of biodiesel in the US.
