Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Italian Republi : United Arab Emirates - Enel brings 'green' energy to the Italian Embassy

A 'green' revolution has taken place at the Italian Embassy in the United Arab Emirates where the installation of two solar PV systems on the roof of the building hosting the Italian Embassy was completed recently. It was part of the 'Green Embassies' project promoted by the Renewable Energy Division of Enel Green Power in association with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and the Italian Embassy in the UAE capital. 'I am very proud of such a remarkable goal, that was made possible thanks to the extraordinary cooperation of the Enel Group, further confirming the great attention paid by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to environmental sustainability,' said Italian Ambassador Liborio Stellino. 'I am also very proud of this PV system: the first ever to become operational in an Embassy on the territory of the United Arab Emirates. I trust that this important initiative, which stands out also as a remarkable example of 'economic diplomacy' and of ' public-private partnership', will further enhance the reputation of the Abu Dhabi Emirate and its works and projects with the diplomatic and the international community,' the Italian ambassador concluded.

The 'Green Embassies' or 'Green Farnesina' project is proof of the commitment made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its diplomatic/consular network to blend tradition, technology and respect for the environment with a view to finding a sustainable solution for its operations. The project was first launched in 2010 in Brasilia, where Enel Green Power installed a PV system with a total installed capacity of 50 kWp on the roof of the building hosting the Italian Embassy in Brazil. In the following years the Enel Group installed PV systems on the roof of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as on the roofs of the buildings hosting Italian embassies and consulates in cities such as London, Tehran, Dhaka, Casablanca, Rio de Janeiro and Asmara. The PV system installed by the Enel Group on the roof of the Italian embassy in Brasilia generates approx. 62,000 kWh of electricity per year, meeting nearly 15 percent of the Embassy's energy demand and preventing the emission of about three tons of CO2 into the atmosphere per year.

The Enel Group recently installed a 29kWh PV system on the roof of the Italian Consulate in Rio de Janeiro as part of the 'Green Embassies' Project. The system is designed to generate approx. 31,200 kWh per year, thus meeting nearly 62 percent of the Consulate's energy demand and preventing the emission into the atmosphere of about 19 tons of CO2 per year.
