To keep up with the trend of international energy management, 18 service industries adopt ISO 50001 energy management system

According to the latest data published by the International Standards Organization, as of 2015, a total of 262 enterprises in Taiwan have established energy management system and receive verification, ranked in second place in Asia, the 7th in the world, with fantastic achievements.

In responding to the international energy management standard ISO 50001 issued by the International Organization for Standardization, the Bureau of Energy, Ministry of Economic Affairs (BOE, MOEA) has assisted service enterprises to adopt energy management systems and to obtain the international certification through a program of exemplary counseling since 2011. As of 2016, the program has counseled 22 sectors in the service industry, 92 enterprises adopted ISO 50001 energy management system and obtained the international certification, resulting in an energy saving of 13,175 kLOE, equivalent to a reduction of NTD 201.32 million in energy expenditures, and a reduction of 29,761 tonnes in carbon dioxide emissions (77 Daan Forest Park's annual carbon absorption).

BOE also mentioned that in order to encourage the enterprises to improve the energy-using performance and energy-management actively, holding the activity of 'Service Industry Results Presentation in Energy Management System Exemplary Counseling' on December 12, 2016. Mrs. Ling-Hui Chen, Deputy Director-General of BOE awarded a certification to the 18 energy users (the details are listed in Annex) who passed ISO 50001 evaluation, amounting to a saving of 2,567 kLOE in energy, equivalent to a reduction of NTD 39.18 million in energy expenditures, and a reduction of 5,878 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions (15 Daan Forest Park annual carbon absorption).

In addition, the Secretary-General of the Center for Corporate Sustainability, Yu-ming Li, was invited to give a speech on the trend of energy management system development for domestic and foreign markets, also invited two representatives of benchmark enterprises to share the experiences on introducing energy management system, it is hoped that the achievements of exemplary counseling can be disseminated.

As the first government agency, the Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan joined the energy management system exemplary counseling in 2016. By assessing the equipment with highest energy consumption and energy-saving technology, the executive team gave priority to replace the old air-conditioning systems, ice water and other energy-saving measures, saving electricity by 139,000 kWh, reducing 73.2 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. By introducing ISO 50001, Sin-Lou Medical Foundation gradually improved the energy efficiency of chiller unit and lighting equipment, developing the map of control-system with construction division, monitoring daily data, implementing the immediate energy-saving measures, strengthening the energy-saving measures and saving electricity by 900,000 kWh, reducing 476 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. Lastly, Taishin International Bank was invited to share the experience of ISO 50001 along with Electrical Information and Communication Technology (EICT), strengthening the performance of the energy management system and uplifting the overall efficiency.

This activity successfully promoted the achievements of service sector in building the energy management system over the years. By sharing successful energy-saving stories from different sectors, it is hoped to lead more enterprises to participate in energy-saving actions and actively adopt the energy management system so as to achieve the goal of sustainable development.
