Producers of metals and other raw materials rose as anticipation of elevated grain and metals prices offset the impact of a soaring dollar.
The dollar rose by more than 1% against a basket of rival currencies, weighing on precious metals.
Gold futures closed 1% lower at $1630.90 an ounce, the lowest level since April 2020.
Commodities mining and trading giant, Glencore, said it would pay a penalty and costs of about $320 million, after pleading guilty to British charges of bribing officials in West Africa for preferential access to crude oil.
