Ireland retail sales continue fall in May — Central Statistics Office

(Alliance News) - Irish retail sales continued to fall in May, data from the Central Statistics Office showed on Friday.

The volume of retail sales edged down 0.6% monthly in May and was 1.0% below the level of May 2023.

For April, the CSO had reported a monthly decline of 1.2% and an annual contraction of 0.9%.

The largest monthly volume fall in May was in Clothing, Footwear & Textiles, down 6.4%, followed by a decline of 4.5% in Motor Trades.

Annually, the largest decline in May was in retail sales classified as 'other' by 6.4%, followed by Hardware, Paints & Glass which were down 5.5%.

The largest monthly increase in May was in Bars, up 14% and Books, Newspapers & Stationery, up 7.0%.

The sharpest annual increase in May was in Books, Newspapers & Stationery, up 8.1%, followed by Clothing, Footwear & Textiles, up 4.9%.
