Melbourne, Australia (ABN Newswire) - Deputy Prime Minister the Honourable Barnaby Joyce has been confirmed as a keynote speaker at this year's International Mining and Resources Conference (IMARC) in Melbourne.

IMARC General Manager — Asia Pacific Anita Richards said she was thrilled Hon. Joyce had been confirmed to speak at the conference.

"Hon. Joyce has been a strong supporter of the vital role the resources sector plays in Australia's economy throughout his political career," she said.

"As well as being Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. Joyce is also the Minister for Resources and Northern Australia, and his address will focus on the importance of infrastructure development and investment in the north.

"There are some extraordinary opportunities waiting to be unlocked in Northern Australia, but ensuring the right infrastructure is in place will be critical.

"Zinc is one of the best performing commodities in the world right now and Australia has one of the largest zinc provinces on the planet in the Mt Isa Super Basin - and this is just one of many potential opportunities across the top end.

"I am very much looking forward to hearing the Government's plans for developing Northern Australia's economic infrastructure."

Ms Richards said IMARC had also confirmed Edgar Basto from BHP as a speaker at the conference.

Mr Basto is Asset President for the company's Western Australian Iron Ore business.

"Mr Basto has an extraordinary personal story, growing up in one of Colombia's poorest areas before steadily building a career that now sees him leading one of BHP's biggest businesses," Ms Richards said.

"Iron ore is an enormous component of our resources sector and BHP is a global giant in iron ore production.

"Given how central iron ore is to global economic development I'm sure Mr Basto's insights into international trends will be fascinating."

IMARC will be held in Melbourne from 30 October to 2 November.

Now in its fourth year, IMARC has quickly established itself as Australia's premier mining and resources conference.

The largest — and the only truly international — resources conference in Australia, this year's IMARC is expected to see a 20 percent increase in delegates compared to 2016.
