Housing Recovery Broadens Across Queensland

14 January 2016

Houses, units and renovations in most parts of Queensland are benefiting from the housing recovery according to Housing Industry Association.

Warwick Temby, HIA's Queensland Executive Director said "at a state-wide level housing activity is up in all parts of the industry based on the November 2015 regional building approval data released by ABS today.

"The multi-unit sector continues to dominate the growth in approvals being up by a sizeable 79% across the State in the three months to November 2015 compared with the same period of 2014.

"South East Queensland and Cairns have seen the biggest growth in the unit sector.

"Unit approvals accounted for two thirds of all the new home building approvals in Brisbane: not that long ago it was around 40%.

"The detached home approvals have grown a more modest 3% over the year to November but have grown in most parts of the State, with the exception of the resources based cities in Central and North Queensland.

"The renovations sector has been the slowest sector of the home building industry to show recovery. But there has been a solid 6% growth in renovation approvals with only Bundaberg experiencing a decline over the year to November.

"These figure augur well for the prospects for activity and employment growth in home building in Queensland to continue for a considerable period," Mr Temby concluded.
