The Federal Trade Commission has proposed rules banning the use of artificial intelligence tools for impersonation of individuals.

The FTC said Thursday it was proposing a change to a rule that already bans impersonation of businesses or government agencies, which would extend the protections to all individuals.

The agency is seeking comment from the public on whether the revised rule should make it illegal for a firm, including an AI platform, to provide goods or services that they know or have reason to know are being used to harm consumers through impersonation.

The rule against government and business impersonation is being finalized Thursday by the commission.
