Shares of energy companies rose after strong earnings from Exxon Mobil.

Shares of Exxon rose after the largest U.S. oil company by market capitalization posted fourth-quarter earnings of $12.8 billion, up from $8.9 billion in the same period the year before.

Oil futures ticked up, but completed their third straight monthly decline as supply-shortage fears faded during a relatively mild winter in Europe.
