The Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment (DCCAE) is looking for the public's feedback on our draft policy statement on electricity interconnection.

Electricity Interconnection has a number of possible benefits such as improved security of supply, sustainability and competitiveness. Ireland has one interconnector to the UK and there are currently two proposed electricity interconnector projects. DCCAE feel that it is important to put in place solid national policy in order to give policy certainty to developers and to the Irish public.

The attached document contains Ireland's current policy on interconnection from a national and European point of view. It also contains a list of items that the Commission for the Regulation of Utilities (CRU) need to take into consideration when they are deciding whether or not proposed interconnector projects are of public benefit. CRU is responsible for awarding the licences to the project promoters to transport electricity and maintain an interconnector.

Your views and feedback are sought on this public consultation document. Please pay particular attention to the list of questions contained on the last page of the document. Submissions should be e-mailed to interconnectionpolicy@dccae.gov.ie or posted to:
