Products included in the 2013 Product of the Year Storage Management Tools category include storage resource management, performance monitoring, capacity planning and provisioning, and storage migration. Many of the 2013 entries were upgrades to existing products that now feature enhanced capabilities for a range of storage systems and operating environments. Data Dynamics StorageX 7.0 was chosen for the ability to simplify storage migration, consolidation, and archiving of file data in large, complex, multi-vendor file storage environments. Version 7.0 also aggregates and centralizes the management of network file storage environments and streamlines workflows when adding, consolidating, or refreshing Network Attached Storage (NAS) and Windows storage systems.

According to the editors of Storage Magazine, "StorageX is a storage management platform designed for large environments where lots of vendors' products are in play. Version 7.0 showcases new data migration features, including policies that automatically scan storage resources on a scheduled basis and identify folders that contain data that should be migrated to less expensive tiers of storage."

Many Fortune 500 companies and large organizations manage data intensive file storage environments that can be complex to upgrade. StorageX 7.0 addresses the requirements of enterprise IT professionals by accelerating new hardware adoption, simplifying storage management, increasing data availability, optimizing storage capacity, minimizing user downtime and reducing the cost of ownership of networked storage infrastructure. StorageX helps organizations to refresh their storage infrastructure annually while reducing risks and business disruptions when integrating new technologies, migrating data to new platforms, and optimizing file storage environments.

An advanced capability introduced in version 7.0 of StorageX is the new Migration Projects feature. Migration Projects provides the ability to model, validate and automate storage migrations to reduce risks and time requirements. With Migration Projects, users can pre-test different migration scenarios using the migration project design wizard. When users finalize and execute their design, StorageX automatically creates, or provisions, target items on destination file storage resources, such as volumes, CIFS shared folders, NFS exports, and quotas. StorageX also automatically generates phased migration policies for the project that migrate file data, share and export settings, and file attributes and permissions from sources to destinations based on the migration project schedule defined by the user.

Other product highlights in version 7.0 include:

  • Phased Migrations: Create phased migration policies that move file data stored in CIFS shared folders or NFS exports.
  • Archival Migrations: Create archival migration policies that automatically scan storage resources on a scheduled basis and identify folders that contain file data that should be migrated to less-expensive secondary storage.
  • DFS Namespace Management: Simplify DFS namespace management using new management capabilities that smoothly integrate with StorageX Migration Project and data movement software all from within a single console.

"Being named a finalist in the 2013 Product of the Year Awards is great recognition of the time and effort our development team has poured into version 7.0," said Piyush Mehta, CEO, Data Dynamics, Inc. "While many storage management solutions promise a higher level of efficiency, we deliver. In many cases, StorageX provides an order of magnitude greater time savings compared to traditional storage migration procedures. We are pleased to be named in these awards and look forward to many more successes in the coming year."
